Studying to be a personal trainer: explaining Premier Training’s ‘Blended’ part-time course and online learning.
I chose to train as a personal trainer with Premier Training International because they offer a ‘Blended’ part-time course. The ‘Blended’ option is so-called because it blends face-to-face teaching and assessments and traditional methods of learning (like studying from a manual) with online studying, which includes ‘e-classes’, pod casts and interactive presentations. The beauty of being able to study online is that I can study all of my modules from the comfort of my home, without having to travel to and from a fitness training center venue and sit for hours in a classroom.

In fact, I can study just about anywhere I like, including at the office in my lunch break, on the train or even in my garden on a sunny day (only possible with remote access, of course). This means I have massive flexibility to choose when, where and how I study, and for me – as I have a full on, full-time job – this really is the only reason why I am now able to train as a personal trainer. I honestly don’t think I’d have taken on a course had it required me to sit in a classroom several nights a week or almost every weekend, for months on end.
Some people might think that Blended students might not get as much out of the course as students who learn in a traditional classroom, but I would totally disagree. Firstly, once I’ve logged in to my own personal online training platform, all of my modules of study are clearly laid out. Within the modules, such as ‘The Skeletal system’ or ‘The Muscular system’, there are smaller sections which I have to work through, then confirm that I have read and understood them. At the end of each module, there is then a Worksheet test that you have to pass with a minimum of 80%, otherwise you cannot proceed onto the next module. This is a great way to consolidate your learning and ensure you have absorbed your studies. Best of all, once you have completed any of the modules, you can go back to view the content as many times as you like, from videos demonstrating the correct way to perform individual exercises to PDF presentations on how the body creates energy – unlike a classroom environment.

My favorite part of the studying has to be the ‘e-classes’. Believe it or not, they’re so much fun. Each e-class is lead by one of Premier’s PT’s who talks to you via a web cam to take you through a particular subject. Plus they’re on hand to answer any questions you have. What makes it good fun is that all the students communicate through typing messages to each other and the PT (so you don’t need to invest in a web cam yourself) – think MSN or a chat room. Often it gets competitive (in a jokey way) about who can type the fastest to answer the PTs questions, mixed with compliments and encouragement when you get something right. All of this is also accompanied on the screen by a power point presentation which the PT can draw on from his end, so if, for example, you’re not sure where the pulmonary artery is, he can mark it so you can see on screen.
I definitely think this Blended option would appeal to parents, as they can study while their kids are at school or are taking a nap, without having to worry about childcare as they would if they had to attend a training centre. Similarly, it’s very flexible for people like me who want to train but can’t or don’t want to give up their full-time jobs.
