Studying to be a personal trainer: 1st Attendance weekend
Gym in Navalur
After a month of hard-core studying and experiencing a de-ja-vu- like feeling of being back in school doing GCSE Biology, it was time to put everything I’d learned from my manual reading and online classes – covering the Skeletal, Neuromuscular, Cardio Respiratory and Energy systems – into action during my first practical assessment weekend.
It was great, if a little nerve-racking, to get into a real classroom, meet my fellow students and compare notes on how we were all finding the Blended part-time course. Before long, we were getting to know each other even better as we watched each other perform various stretching, strengthening and cardio exercises to ensure we could adequately demonstrate them and the equipment safely to clients.

It was a long day, but I suspect many of my classmates continued to study once they got home, as I did, in preparation for the theory exam we were to have the next morning. In order to pass, we needed 70 per cent or above, and while I was confidant I’d studied hard, I was still very nervous.
Once the exam was over the next day, it was time to hit the gym again, this time to take each other through gym inductions with ready-prepared plans, to show we could give plenty of advice and teaching points on technique, performance and safety. It was another tough but very fun day and at the end we got the results of our theory exam, which everyone passed. I left in a great mood, feeling that I’d really learnt a lot, and looking forward to continuing the studies. Bring on next month!

Studying to be a personal trainer: 2nd Attendance weekend
All fitness and gym instructors need to have an up-to-date Certificate in First Aid so they are prepared for any accidents happen in the gym, so I found myself spending a whole day of my second assessment weekend practicing CPR on dummies, rolling my classmates into the recovery position and wrapping them up with slings and bandages.
Far more challenging, was my first practical gym instruction assessment on the second day, for which I stupidly used my boyfriend as my ‘body’ to work with and demonstrate my newly acquired knowledge and skills. After weeks of planning his 90-minute gym induction in excruciating detail, nothing could have prepared me for the fact that he had nil coordination and was incapable of lunging or squatting without his knees turning in or nearly falling over.
The session was very, very hard work, and it took all my patience and knowledge to get him exercising with good technique. I was, however, informed that complete beginners often find exercises I might consider easy as very hard, and that my session was quite typical of a real beginner’s induction. Funnily enough, I was proud of myself for teaching my ‘client’ to exercise well, and I got a real taste for what it must be like to help people get fit safely.
Studying to be a personal trainer: 3rd Attendance weekend
After four months of studying, I’ve completed the first part of my course and I am now a fully-qualified gym instructor. Woo hoo! The achievement only sank in after I received a lovely certificate through the post (my mum and dad were so proud), and it’s exciting to think I could now go and work in a gym and give people inductions. My third attendance weekend wasn’t easy though.
There was a lot of studying and planning to do and a ton of paperwork to fill out to prepare for all the final practical assessments, including a 20-minute group session, a one-on-one 90-minute induction and a ‘walking the floor’ session that involved approaching clients in the gym and giving them exercise guidance and advice. We didn’t stop moving for the whole two days and I felt exhausted afterwards, not just from the physical element of the assessments but also from the level of focus and concentration needed to get through.
However, this was also the most entertaining weekend so far – the group of students I’m studying with are lovely and we all really bonded and had a good laugh. All in all, it’s been a thoroughly rewarding experience.
Studying to be a personal trainer: 4th Attendance weekend
After qualifying as a gym instructor my latest attendance weekend threw me in to the real business of becoming a personal trainer – and boy, was it fun! Yes, I did have a slight panic when I received not one, but three new and very thick manuals through the post to accompany the second part of the course (there’s been a LOT of studying), but the practical sessions more than made up for the late nights.
It sounds clichéd, but as I struggled to use blood pressure machines, callipers, tape measures and find pulses on fellow students, to master how to screen clients as a base to measure their future progress, it really confirmed for me that personal training isn’t all about making money or having a flexible job, but helping people get fit, happy and live for longer. And that, as far as I’m concerned, is a satisfying thing to aspire to.
Studying to be a personal trainer: 5th Attendance weekend
Training part-time to be a PT has so far spanned four months and I have another three months to go, so it was bound to happen that one of my attendance weekends clashed with a holiday or illness, or both in my case.
Realising a bootcamp holiday fell on an attendance weekend, I contacted Premier and managed to reschedule it for two weeks later at the Dartford centre instead of where I normally study at Finsbury Park, London. Unfortunately, by the time the second date came around, I’d come down with a cold and the last thing I felt like doing was jumping around a gym.
Now I’m better, I am worried that I am behind, but with some juggling I should be able to squeeze in my missed weekend of practical study before the course finishes. Not to suggest that I haven’t been studying though. Next month, I’ll be sitting two exams on nutrition, and seeing as I’m the fitness editor, it’s not exactly my top subject. Time to get back to those books!
Personal Training: 6th training attendance weekend
My latest attendance weekend was a fairly tough experience, with two nutrition exams, both practical and theoretical lessons on how to help clients come back from injury, and much time spent playing catch up from the weekend I’d missed last month.
A few minutes into Saturday morning’s first lesson, I considered giving up and walking out again – especially when I heard we had a big exam next month covering everything we’d learnt so far on the course. I was worried I might have too big a gap in my knowledge and not enough time to fill it! But when I got chatting to fellow classmates in a break, I found that everyone else was feeling the pressure too.
I guess the simple fact is becoming a personal trainer is meant to be challenging because you have to be able to help all different types of people who are paying for your expertise. If it were that easy to pick up, everyone would be doing it! The good news is I passed my two nutrition exams with flying colours. The bad news is I’ve got lots of course work to do over the next two months before the whole course ends. I feel alright about it though. The end of the tunnel is in sight and I can’t wait to get out there and start teaching!
Personal Training: 7th training attendance weekend
Hurrah! I’m almost at the end of my course and it’s amazing to think I’ll soon be able to take on clients – and get paid for helping them!
There’s no doubting it’s been hard work, but each month has introduced new, interesting subjects to tackle. Most recently, in addition to learning how to train people with health conditions such as diabetes, asthma, obesity and high blood pressure, we’ve been discovering the business side of being a personal trainer.
Everything from marketing and doing the accounts to arranging insurance and keeping client records up-to-date is covered, although how much you use after qualifying depends on whether you decide to work for a gym or go freelance and run your own business.
I’m off to a training centre in Liverpool in a few weeks time to catch up on a weekend I missed when I was ill so I’ve got a busy month ahead with my final attendance weekend just one month away. But with the end in sight, I say bring it on!
